Getting Around Antalya: Your Complete Transport Guide

While Antalya Implant provides transfers to and from all your appointments, you’ll likely want to explore this beautiful city between dental visits. Fortunately, getting around Antalya is easy, with multiple transport options suiting different budgets and preferences. From the modern tram system to affordable taxis and pleasant walks along the Mediterranean coast, this guide covers everything you need to navigate Antalya confidently.

Antalya Tram (Antray)

Antalya’s modern tram system, known as Antray, is the most convenient public transport option for visitors. The main line runs from the Antalya Museum in the west through the city center (including stops near Kaleiçi and the shopping districts) and continues to the eastern suburbs. The tram is clean, air-conditioned, frequent (every 5-10 minutes during daytime), and very affordable.

To use the tram, you’ll need an AntalyaKart—a rechargeable transit card available from kiosks at major tram stops and some shops. The card costs approximately 15 Turkish Lira, plus whatever credit you load. Each journey costs around 7 Turkish Lira (less than £0.50), making it exceptionally economical. Simply tap your card on the reader when boarding. The tram is particularly useful for reaching the Antalya Museum, the city center shopping areas, and the transfer point for buses to other destinations.

A charming historic tram called Nostalji Tramvay runs along a short route through the city center, passing by the Old Town and clock tower. While more of a tourist attraction than practical transport, it’s a pleasant way to see the central area and costs the same as the modern tram. The vintage carriages date from the 1950s and provide great photo opportunities.

City Buses

Antalya has an extensive bus network reaching areas the tram doesn’t serve, including Lara Beach, Konyaaltı Beach, and surrounding towns. Buses use the same AntalyaKart as the tram, making transfers seamless. The main bus terminal (Otogar) is located north of the city center and serves as a hub for both city and intercity routes.

For dental tourists, the most useful routes include the KC06 and KC08 buses connecting the city center to Lara Beach, and routes serving Konyaaltı. Google Maps provides accurate real-time information on Antalya buses, showing routes, stops, and approximate arrival times. Simply enter your destination, and it will display the best public transport options.

Buses are safe and generally reliable, though they can be crowded during rush hours. Air conditioning varies—some buses are wonderfully cool, others less so. If traveling during hot months, the tram or taxi may be more comfortable. Buses stop operating around 11pm-midnight, so plan accordingly for late outings.

Taxis

Taxis are plentiful, reasonably priced by European standards, and often the most convenient option, especially after dental procedures when you want comfort over economy. Yellow taxis operate throughout the city and can be hailed on the street, found at taxi ranks, or ordered through apps like BiTaksi. All legitimate taxis have meters (taksimetre)—ensure yours is switched on at the start of your journey.

To give you an idea of costs: a taxi from Kaleiçi to Konyaaltı Beach costs approximately 80-120 Turkish Lira (£4-6). From the city center to Lara Beach, expect 200-300 Turkish Lira (£10-15). Fares increase slightly at night (midnight to 6am). Tipping isn’t mandatory, but rounding up to the nearest convenient amount is appreciated.

Most taxi drivers speak limited English, so having your destination written down or shown on your phone’s map is helpful. The BiTaksi app is excellent—you can book taxis, see upfront pricing, pay by card, and avoid any communication difficulties. Download it before your trip for a smoother experience. Uber doesn’t operate in Antalya, but BiTaksi fills the same need effectively.

Car Rental

Renting a car gives you ultimate flexibility to explore Antalya and the surrounding region. The Turkish Riviera offers incredible day-trip opportunities—ancient ruins at Perge and Aspendos, the mountain-top ghost town of Termessos, stunning beaches at Olympos, and the eternal flames of Yanartaş. Having your own vehicle makes these adventures convenient.

Major international companies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget) and numerous local agencies offer rentals. Prices are competitive—expect £20-40 per day for an economy car, less for longer rentals or off-peak periods. You’ll need your passport, driving license (UK licenses are accepted), and a credit card for the security deposit. International Driving Permits aren’t required but can be useful if your license isn’t in Roman script.

Driving in Antalya is relatively straightforward. Roads are generally good, signage is clear, and Turkish drivers, while sometimes assertive, aren’t aggressive. The main challenges are city center congestion and finding parking in popular areas. For beach resorts and countryside exploration, driving is pleasant and scenic. However, we generally recommend against driving immediately after dental procedures—sedation effects and medication may impair your ability, and you deserve to rest and recover.

Walking

Antalya is surprisingly walkable, especially in the most visitor-friendly areas. Kaleiçi (Old Town) is best explored on foot—its narrow lanes aren’t suitable for vehicles anyway. Wandering through the historic quarter, discovering hidden cafes, boutique shops, and scenic viewpoints is one of Antalya’s great pleasures. The walk from Kaleiçi along the coast to the Antalya Museum (about 3 kilometers) passes parks and sea views, making a lovely afternoon stroll.

Konyaaltı’s beachfront promenade is perfect for walks, stretching several kilometers with cafes, restaurants, and beach access points along the way. The area is flat and well-maintained. In the evenings, locals and visitors alike stroll along the waterfront enjoying the Mediterranean atmosphere. Comfortable footwear is essential, especially on Kaleiçi’s cobblestones.

Walking during the hottest hours of summer (roughly noon to 4pm, June through August) can be exhausting. Plan indoor activities or rest during this period and explore on foot in mornings and evenings when temperatures are more pleasant. Stay hydrated—carry water with you, readily available from ubiquitous shops and kiosks.

Transport for Day Trips

Antalya is an excellent base for day trips, and various transport options serve different destinations. Dolmuş (shared minibuses) run regular routes to nearby towns and beaches including Side, Alanya, Kaş, and Kemer. They’re cheap and frequent, departing when full from designated stops. Intercity buses from the Otogar reach destinations throughout Turkey—great if you want to extend your trip to Cappadocia, Istanbul, or other regions.

Organized tours offer hassle-free excursions with hotel pickup, guided experiences, and return transport. Popular options include Pamukkale day trips, Perge and Aspendos ancient city tours, and boat trips along the coast. Your hotel or our patient coordinators can help arrange tours. Prices vary but typically range from £30-80 per person depending on the destination and inclusions.
