What is a Root Canal (Endodontic Treatment)?
Deep inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, lies a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes inflamed or infected—usually due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack in the tooth—it can cause severe pain or lead to an abscess. A root canal treatment involves carefully removing this infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it to prevent future infection.
Breaking the Myth: A Completely Pain-Free Experience
Many people fear root canals, believing they are painful. The truth is exactly the opposite: the infection is what causes the agonizing pain, and the root canal treatment is the cure that relieves it! With modern techniques and profound local anesthesia, having a root canal at our Antalya clinic is no more uncomfortable than getting a standard filling. Our priority is your absolute comfort from the moment you sit in the chair.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
How do you know if the pulp is infected? Look out for these common warning signs:
Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
Prolonged sensitivity or pain to hot or cold temperatures (even after the heat or cold has been removed).
Discoloration or darkening of the tooth.
Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.
The Step-by-Step Procedure
Diagnosis & Anesthesia: We use advanced 3D X-rays to accurately map the roots of your tooth. Then, we apply highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the area.
Isolation & Cleaning: A small protective sheet called a “dental dam” is placed to keep the tooth clean and dry. We make a tiny opening in the crown of the tooth and use specialized, highly flexible rotary instruments to gently clean the infected pulp from the canals.
Filling the Canals: Once thoroughly disinfected and shaped, the hollowed-out canals are filled with a biocompatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha and sealed with an adhesive cement.
Final Restoration: A tooth that has undergone a root canal becomes brittle over time. To protect it and restore it to full function, we highly recommend capping it with a premium Zirconia or E-max dental crown a few days later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a root canal treatment hurt?
No. Thanks to modern anesthetics and advanced techniques, the procedure itself is entirely painless. Most patients report feeling instant relief from the severe toothache that brought them to the clinic in the first place.
Why shouldn't I just have the tooth extracted?
Saving your natural tooth is always the best option. Extracting a tooth creates a gap that can cause surrounding teeth to shift, leading to bite problems and jawbone loss. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant or bridge is also more complex and expensive than a root canal.
How long does the treatment take?
Depending on which tooth is affected (front teeth usually have one canal, while back molars can have three or four), the procedure generally takes between 45 to 90 minutes. It is usually completed in a single visit, though severe infections might require two visits.
Do I really need a dental crown after a root canal?
Yes, in most cases—especially for back teeth (premolars and molars) that handle heavy chewing forces. Without the living pulp, the tooth loses its hydration and becomes brittle. A Zirconia or E-max crown protects the tooth from cracking and restores its natural appearance.
What is the recovery like?
You may experience mild tenderness in the area for a few days as the surrounding tissues heal, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. This discomfort is easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers like Ibuprofen.
Do you use advanced technology for root canals?
Absolutely. Our specialist endodontists utilize digital apex locators, advanced rotary files, and high-magnification tools to ensure every microscopic canal is perfectly cleaned, shaped, and sealed, guaranteeing the highest success rate possible.
